If something happens but no value changes, no decision changes, no question sharpens, and no pressure increases, it may be description, texture, or exposition—but it is not a strong beat. Useful beat test: > After this beat, what is different for the protagonist, antagonist, central relationship, reader’s question, or story world? If the answer is “nothing,” the beat may need to be cut, combined, moved, or rewritten.
